2011-12 BBall thus far
« on: November 29, 2011, 06:53:52 PM »

The tune of most fans is how deep and athletic we are top to bottom this year.
My opinion is our depth is an illusion caused by our first 5 (Spradling, JO, Jamar, Gipson, and McGruder) being less than spectacular. This allows Irving, Southwell, Jeremy Jones (bones), Diaz, A-Rod, Victor, Nino, and Omari to be right on their heels moreso than a typical 12-13 deep would be behind the starting 5.
I think this year we will be more consistant as scoring will have to be by committee opposed to the Jacob Pullen show but clearly losing he and Kelly significantly lowers our ceiling.
One the plus side you've got to feel like this group will gel and buy in to Frank's system much sooner than the 08-09 and 10-11 teams did.
My 3 keys for success this season are our forwards and center Gipson, Jamar, and JO
-Gipson has been a beast so far and is no doubt the suprise of the team through 4 games. The question is can his conditioning and defense improve enough throughout the year that it will allow us the be a player?
-Jamar - does anyone have a clue with him? If he puts the team on his back we will exceed all expectations. But he'll have to show up every game and avoid the stupid fouls that have kept him on the bench with foul trouble. He hasn't done it for 3 years but maybe he'll break out!
-JO: Defensively he's been decent and a great shot blocker and offensively he showed us last year that he can make Jeff Withey from KU look like a scrub, he's capable of scoring from the elbow, off the dribble, and with his back to the basket on the block. Again we will need more consistency from him.

Prediction:
20-12 (9-9) BUBBLE TEAM

I have to agree with a lot of those points.  I would do a bigger summary that is: K-State the last few years has had someone step up and consistently lead the team.  The so called "last second shot" guy.  This team was believed to have 3 of them this year (Sprads, McGrudes, JS) with the thought that McGrudes would be the "last second shot" guy.  When Frank says that our new guy (A-Rod) is his pick for the shot, that is a worth a concern.  From 3 (which is NOTHING YET, but still something) games in the books, I just have to think this year we miss the NCAA with an NIT berth and the next 2 years we claim our top 1-4 spot back in the Big 12.  Truth is, JS is someone we will miss next year, but not a Pullen type loss, so I am really looking forward to seeing what we manage this year and getting ready for some very quality years ahead.

Agreed - Who do we go to when we need a bucket? Hearing about Rodney's knee being back to 100% made me think he'd add the explosiveness/quickness to his game needed to create is own shot but we haven't seen much of that yet. The person who seems to be the most competent at creating his own shot is Jeremy Jones and he will not be near the court during crunch time.
Jamar will be a tough loss, he's one of very few in recent history who've stayed through their senior season and he's one of my favorites to watch when he's clicking.

Things started to look better for us second half. If we can keep up that effort and game play we should be able to make it into the Tourny with a surprising season. JS actually looked pretty good in his first game, Gipson is looking like he will be one of our best players in the coming years, JO just needs to be consistent and we would have a solid game inside the paint. If Rodney and Will get things together this team has the possibility of surprise everyone. I don't want to sound like the optimistic fool who gets let down hardcore but I really think we could finish in the top 1-4 of the big 12 this year if things come together. I do agree that the next couple of years look like they will turn out far better than this season.

24 you're spot on about the dillusion of our depth. FTW and I were having a discussion today trying to figure out who is our go to guy in crunch time when we need that 3 pointer to put us over the hump or give us the win.

What we came up with is if it's a planned play and McGruder was in his "spot" in the corner you drop the ball to him FTW. Any other time the rock goes to Spradling because he's been in that situation before, made the WRONG decision, and is smart enough if it happens to him again he'll know what to do. I also trust Sprads to be able to make a quick 3. Rodney seems to need time to setup his shot.

Happens to me occasionally.  You took to long to type, your session timed out at which point it randomally cuts off your thoughts.  Save your verbiage and then just modify and re-post if you get the "session expired" warning.

That gap I mentioned at the beginning of the thread is widening. I feel good about leaving Shane and Angel out of our Top 5 above but I'm going to have to expand that to a top 6 and put Tay in there. Irving is our defensive stopper and will have to be big for us defending the best guard from the opposing team. He played well against Taylor tonight for the most part, he's a serviceable shooter and will slash if you put a weaker defender on him. I feel comfortable saying we have a solid first 6 - then Angel and Shane (who we will need defensively over the course of the year to guard small forwards and long guards) - then the rest, who again will have to step in from time to time especially Vic and Diaz  is our bigs get into foul trouble. I'm gaining a little confidence as I see our 8-9 man rotation starting to shape up. Jones may also still be in the mix if we are stuggling offensively.
BTW - WOW - Gipson continues to impress. Did not see him as a guy who could go out this soon and put up 17 and 13!
Also even though Rodney couldn't score the ball tonight saw some of the explosiveness he was missing last year - excited about that!
