Martin talk hurting our recruiting?
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:19:13 AM »

Even though we at least know at this site that Martin isn't going anywhere based on a report from a source very close to Martin, but couldn't this national talk hurt our recruiting some?

Maybe I am over thinking this, but now our staff is looking to fill a spot and I would sure hate for a recruit that is on the edge right now decide they don't want to risk the coaching change and pick another school.  With all the daily picks from recruits, is this hurting us in any way?

Sorry CF you'll just need to trust us on this one.  I can tell you it is not the "source" that posts on this board.

I don't think this hurt's recruiting at all. The only thing the recruit would have to do before they sign with us is to have a clause that says if coach changes I am free of all commitment. This is almost standard these days and I would suspect that it is a non-issue for Frank and crew to have that in there.

I don't know why but it bothers me that he says that he will always listen to offers. I thought he loved us? He says he loves us but then he says he'll always listen. Which is it? Maybe this shouldn't bother me but it does.

Apparently they're talking to Harvard's Tommy Amaker. There's also interest in Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter.

There's this juicy nugget:

Meanwhile, Kansas State coach Frank Martin would listen to Miami and would be willing to go home to his native Miami, according to multiple sources. But those same sources told ESPN.com that the search firm called Martin's representatives and said that Miami and the search firm had no interest in pursuing Martin.

:palm:

I have mixed feelings.  Coaching is his career, aka, advancement in the job is to go to large schools and continue to make more money or get raises and then maybe make a jump to NBA.  Frank is obviously a very hard worker and I would assume he wouldn't ever want to settle for anything.  Obviously a job like KU/UNC/Kentucky (over $3mil figures) would be final pit stops for coaches before making a jump to NBA if that’s a desire.  KSU isn't one of those, so any coach we bring in would be susceptible to moving on and advancing their career.  So part of me thinks (and had confirmation last week) that he thoroughly likes KSU and could be using this opportunity to get a raise and advance his career.  Another part of me thinks there is a more subtle way of getting KSU to offer him more to stay then to interview with AP and go national with his personal thoughts.

So to sum it up, as someone in a business trying to advance my career, I totally understand.  As a hardcore KSU fan, I wish he would have done this behind the scenes.  If I was an administrator for KSU, I would be very pissed about that interview.  Though, he could care more about family/friends in the Manhattan area, fan base like KSU, making enough to secure his future and his kids future (over 1mil a year can easily do that), and KSU at 1.1 or w/e he makes is perfect the way it is.

Wow, where do you start after reading something like this?  Let me first preface my thoughts with the fact that I want Frank in Manhattan.  I also would have understood if he left for Miami (ala Huggins returning home to WV).  But this all sounds like sour grapes to me.

He clearly would have made the move had there been an offer but Miami apparently had no interest in him.  So why does he go to the media.  To me, it would appear he wants another pay raise (similar to the Matt Painter thing) if he stays at KSU.  But why does he deserve one?  He didn't bring a championship to campus (Big 12 or NCAA).  He also doesn't have a ton of other schools wanting his services.  This was not handled well by his camp.

With all that said, I still think he loves K-State.  I think he feels loyal to us (to a certain extent) given the opportunity we gave him.  But he is open to other job possibilities (who wouldn't listen?).  Sorry you had your feelings hurt by Miami, but move on.  And if you have a beef with the KSU athletic department... handle it internally.

its the media making something out of nothing. The only reason its getting so much attention is because Frank has been successful here, and Miami has been terrible. Frank is a native of Miami, and if they could of pulled Frank it would of been one of the biggest off season stories of the year.
