Peterson?
« on: March 05, 2011, 02:36:40 PM »

So, Devon Peterson, today, eh?  No Irving, but Russell sees some minutes.  Martin back to his substitution patterns?

It appears to be working today, all things being equal.

Welcome to the site Net.

I heared Devon had a total of 9 minutes in the last 7 games. Was nice to have him in the game although he did make some mistakes, but he provided a great deal of energy when we needed him. Overall a tough game that we were able to keep battling in and win.

From the KC Star:

Walk-on Devon Peterson took the place of Jacob Pullen in the second half, and there was no drop-off in K-State’s play. In five minutes of action, Peterson scored four points and dished out an assist.

“Devon was awesome,” Frank Martin said. “I should have played him earlier in the game. I should have played him in the Texas game. … He’s been phenomenal in practice. I haven’t put him in because Shane (Southwell) has been playing well. Well, Shane decided to go on vacation this week. Playing Devon was the right decision … and the minutes he got, he performed. We don’t win without Devon Peterson today.”

Will Spradling made three three-pointers and scored 13 points for K-State, but it was his attention to detail that most impressed Martin. “He’s grown so much defensively,” Martin said. “You remember early in the year, everybody used to drive him? They’d throw the ball to his man and go drive him. They don’t do that anymore. That’s because he’s gotten so much better. And on offense, he doesn’t turn it over.”

With sophomore Jordan Henriquez-Roberts developing a knack for shot-blocking, the Wildcats are becoming tough in front of the rim. On Saturday, he blocked five shots. K-State now has 148 blocks for the season, which ranks second in school history. Henriquez-Roberts has 41 of those, giving him the most blocks by a sophomore in school history.

I hope Frank awards him with an open scholarship to even out the classes and gives him a real chance to compete next year.  I think he is the best option to fill Jake's shoes until one of the underclassmen steps into that role.

I think Sprads or Mcruder have already shown they can take the lead for us next year. Sprads really has that team captain auro about him, and not being Bob Knight here either.

Oh, don't get me wrong... Spradling and McGruder will be our leaders (and clutch shooters), but Peterson will be the guy to put his head down and drive to the basket when we need to make something happen with 5 seconds left on the shot clock.

Even though this thread seems to be oriented around new guys stepping up, I still rather have/hopefully Samuels driving and doing that work, Walker style.

My buddy and I went to the game this weekend, you can't miss Pullen's last outing at the octagon of doom, but I was completely surprised to see Russell and Peterson play, even more surprised in how well Peterson played. I really hope to see more of that in games to come. It really was a great team win on Saturday, Pullen's play was less than exciting or impressive but the rest of the team really played well down the stretch.
