Frank Martin Interview on 810

From GPC Post

Quote
Frank still sounds pissed and short with answers....

-Kelly, have no idea how long before NCAA decides...especially with holidays.
-To some degree, kids will be kids....but with young team looking for guidance and leadership, it's just not there with seniors doing this stuff.
-DC and Colon leadership missed so much. Last year we were razor sharp with leadership. Held people accountable.
-This adversity will help us form identity....(stay positive and move forward).
-SP "kids feeling entitled..?" FM doesn't think so. Says it's his job as coach and staff to be demanding of them even if outside thinks they are great. Keep them grounded...etc.
-Frosh and Sophs being asked to lead when it's probably not fair to do so.
-Suspensions, players not playing, etc.....how has it affected cohesiveness? FM-Has nothing to do with how offense looks. That's more because of substandard (and young) guard play.
-Getting beat part of process....lining up playing very good teams....guys learning through it. Something youth just has to go through.
-Careless turnovers.....b/c of young guards.
-Not having players HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH how offense is struggling...."it's a team game."
-SP - Great effort reflection of good coaching.....but break down how much time is spent on conditioning, offense, and defense: FM - conditioning comes first, then defense, the progress towards offense. But, has spent more time on offense with this team than any other year since he's been at K-State.
-FT's - Completely mental. 100% mental. At practice, will make the FT's for most part. Not going to panic because IT IS mental.
-SP...can FT's get better? Will light come on? Or, will it be just an Achilles heel? FM - can improve, but there are some who will never be excellent FT shooters....but can get better. But, there are others who can and should be excellent FT shooters.
-Used Chris Meriwether....."bad shooter".....but mentally tough enough to make FT's. He cited examples of some huge FT's Chris hit late in games even though he sucked as a shooter.......so more mental toughness.
-Time constraints have limited individual time spent on individual shooting.....and kids don't work on this as much in HS....more about running around country and playing games (AAU). Skills (including FT's and shooting in general) just not there when kids arrive on campus.
-Over break, his staff and kids will live in the gym to get shooting corrected.
-Samuals: just not consistent....had been challenge since he's arrived, mainly emotionally. Gets too wrapped up in what went wrong...still way ahead of where he was two years ago, but needs to get better.
-WJ: liked his effort last night. "he's doing fine and getting to the other side of some problems he was facing. He's a beautiful young man and we have embraced and wrapped our arms around him."
-SP: HE appears to be a very good young man with big heart, will light come on. FM - "who cares" as long as he stays the kind of young man he is. "McDonald's All-american"....who cares, those people determining that don't know the kids. He's an unbelievable young man and needs to stop worrying about fulfilling other peoples expectations.
-SP - But, that's part of signing up for big-time BB....FM - absolutely. Have to learn how to handle pressure and expectations....but it's just wrong to place those expectations on 15-16 year old kids.
-"All based on internet. I hate the internet. Biggest problem with the world we live in." (does any coach embrace the internet?)
-SP - there's a caring side to FM....would team be better off if they saw that side during the game? FM - "why don't you come over and watch practice over the course of a week and then ask me the same question"
-SP - don't have time, but will take you up on it for a practice....then repeats question.
-FM - I pressure them to get better...that's what I do. I understand I'm different. I've watched a lot...and studied a lot....of leaders. To me, having them operate under consistent pressure is a positive and will put them in position to succeed.
-FM - I don't know more than any other coach. I listen to people in my organization....keep people around me who are brutally honest....and if they same I'm being too demanding....to tough...then I back off.
-SP - "I'll ask again, do you need to do more loving and cuddling in games?" FM - "I think I do enough....but camera never shows that"
-FF: Turkey or Ham (neither, pork); favorite xmas carol (white Christmas, little drummer boy); open gifts eve or day (midnight Christmas eve...but can't always do); favorite xmas movie (frosty the snow man...any old Christmas carton). SP "they are available on the internet" (now that was funny).
-SP - very appreciative FM came on given the circumstances.....over.

If you guys have thirty minutes to spare, I highly recommend listening to this podcast.  A brilliant interview by Soren Petro who didn't back down from the questions that had to be asked.  Furthermore, true insight into the real personality of Frank Martin.  We are accustomed to his fiery personality on the sideline and witnessed his meltdown at the press conference last night after the game... but I really wish the nation (fans and media) could hear this to get a better idea of what he's all about.

Enjoy.
