What we learned last night...
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:28:36 AM »

1.  Frank wants to move Pullen to shooting guard.  This fact is supported by Spradling starting last night at point guard and the extended minutes Juevol "Canadian Breeze" Myles played.

2.  If McGruder gets in foul trouble (or is having an off night), we will have a hard time filling those minutes.  The best option we have at the 3 is Ojeleye, until Southwell or Nino are game ready.

Thoughts.

To bad Ojeleye makes so many dumb mistakes. Hopefully he will settle in here soon.

Ojeleye is the only one making careless mistakes.  It seems everyone is having trouble handling the ball this year.  I thought Asprilla was suppose to have such great hands and it seems like he loses the ball more than any.  But back to the question at hand.  It did look as if we are lacking at that position when Mcgrud's is out.  Looks like some Freshman are going to have to step it up.  I like Spraulding starting though...He still makes a few Freshman mistakes, but he appears to have good BBIQ.  If he would just relax and get his stroke down.  We need him to score.

I am a fan of Russell.  Did he not play much last night?  I only watched half of the game(first half mainly) and don't recall seeing him in.  I would prefer him over Ojeleye and the others.

Its key for Irving and Russell to step up their game.  I think they have the tools, at this piont, to be serviceable backups but make bad decisions on the court.  The jury is still out on Juevol.

And its asking a lot of Southwell/Nino to be game ready this early in their career if the aforementioned guards (with more experience) can't even achieve this.

With that said, I really like the starting lineup Frank had last night.  Lets just hope the others figure it out soon.

I think we absolutely have to play Pullen off the ball.  I know he wants to be the PG and floor leader, but we need him to be the scorer and playmaker, he can still lead without the ball in his hands as much.  With the ball he is easier to guard, everyone is looking at him instead of running off screens where only his guy knows he is.  His TO's are too high and he his not getting looks he needs.  Frank starting as the off guard was the best move he has made.  I also think that Irving while in the game for Sprads needs to be the PG.  Pullens scoring is our best offensive weapon, and to go along with sprads, and McGruders shooting less help will be available.  Smart move IMO.

Samuels and Kelly are also starting to produce, the teams is finally starting to come together and out of the doghouse, yes I know it was Alcorn State, but I already think we are a much better team than when we last played Duke.  Got to keep getting better and play the best ball at the end of the season.  Yes I heard that on ESPN tonight talking about Michigan State, I wont take credit for that!
