5 Days Later
« on: September 04, 2013, 08:16:34 AM »

Now that it's been 5 days later I'm looking back on the disaster that was last weeks game and seeing a few good things.

1. Jake Waters can throw. Although he had two interceptions his throwing ability to strong. Still don't know why we tried going away from that late in the game, I guess Snyder just likes to run too much.

2. We were getting into the backfield and put pressure on their QB. Their QB is just experienced and poised enough to make the plays and not get quick feet under our attack.

3. This is the 2 time defending FSC national champions. We barely beat a team in 2011 that is far worse than this team was and still ended up with 10 wins.

I think THIS weekend will be a lot more telling to the kind of football team we have than last weekend was. It's all in how they respond. Someone will need to step up as a leader, that was a big hole last week.

It was a hard pill to swallow.  The temperature outside didn't help the cause, but thankfully the fireworks actually made the ride home bearable.  After reflecting on this loss over the past few days, I can't believe how positive I feel about the team.  I have one major concern, but my thoughts are below:

-- We had no national aspirations; this year’s goal was to get double digit wins and a league title.  No one realistically thought this team would do anything on a national scene, so this loss doesn't hurt our initial goals.

-- Waters is hands down a beast thrower.  He had a comp % over 73%, which is insane.  Two picks, but one doesn't count at the end of the game, and the other is a good lesson learned early on.  If you throw short 9/10 times, no reason the CB shouldn't jump the route.  This is more a play calling issue IMHO then Jake, but none the less, he shouldn't have thrown it.

-- The main reason we lost was Snyder (still love the guy), but his scheme reflected last year’s team with QB runs, and abandoning the pass late in the game.  That in a nut shell won us a crap load of games with a team that is built for it.  This team is completely different.  You throw throw throw till they move their coverage back, then run run, and back to the passing.  With a QB at 73%, WHY NOT?  Snyder threw in over 10 QB designed runs.  That is stupid and he won’t make these mistakes twice.

--  This does bring me right to my concern.  He is publically said Sams will get more touches.  So I am certain he will.  But talk about showing our cards.  Sams in the game? Plan for the run!  Waters in the game?  Plan for the pass!  I know you can mix it up and Sams can throw a couple, but give me a break, 75% of the time either of those two are in, you will know what it is.  I just beg that he picks a QB and schemes around him and it better be Waters throwing majority of the time with the cookie monster keeping defenses honest.

-- 8 regular season wins, 1 bowl game win, tied 2nd in the big 12.  That’s my predictions.

I Completely agree with these points. It was just the perfect team to come in and take advantage of our inexperience and lack of leadership. I was really impressed on how Waters did for his first game at this level and knowing Sam's was on the sideline just waiting to get out there makes me even more excited that we don't have all of our eggs in one basket. I think going forward I think our offense will gel and do what they need to do (28-42 points a game) but I think our problem will be the defense also giving up 20-30 points a game :/

Honestly I think the defense out performed on Saturday. They kept an amazing offense to only 24 points! Our offense with fault going to Snyder and the O-Line was unable to score, that is why we lost.

Defense definitely was a lot more fired up than the OL.  I wish there was a way we could have kept Devon Nash, I think he would have been key in our defense.  I am really looking forward to Saturday, to see what kind of character these men have.

Welcome catchick.

Completely agree with you on the character of this team. Hopefully they turn this disappointment to anger then find a way to recover with a win this weekend.

I have no worries about this weekend.  I believe we will give up 24 to their talented QB as our defense continues to mesh.  However, I believe we hang over 42 on them.  Snyder wants to get his #2's action so badly, its not even funny.  He will open the play book up early and often to get a large lead and get our 2's tested.  With some unknown on the defensive side of the ball, he has to get more guys game time action.  We roll big in our next two games.

Good lord! It didn't even cross my mind yet till you mentioned that our 2nd team didn't get any playing time. That is going to hurt down the road. These first 3 games are crucial to Snyder's development of our depth.

Now I have another thing to worry about...
