No Comment on student attendance bc I've been baffled by it as well......
But for the old folks I think there are 3 big problems with our home game attendance for Basketball:
First of all - A great deal of our fans come from Wichita and Kansas City. It’s very hard to make it 2+ hrs to bball games on week nights against crappy opponents. I've made it to all but 3 games this year but have been unable to give my tickets away or sell them on the exchange for the ones I've missed (and that is listing them at $0.24 per ticket, the system minimum) This isn't an excuse - I sit by fans that drive 4 hrs from western KS to every basketball game, there are retired however. But Wichita St and KU, the 2 schools I have some insight on, have fans much closer. I’d estimate about 95% of WSU’s season ticket holders are within 30 minutes of the arena, While about 90% of KU’s are within an hour.
For K-State I’d say we have about 50% of our non-student ticket holders >1 hour away
Second of All - For fans - Sports are a form of entertainment - Frank Martin basketball is not very entertaining at times. I love winning and will always take an ugly win over a loss. I love Franks personality, his fire, his focus on defense and rebounding, and his emphasis on physical and mental toughness. HOWEVER, this time of year, Frank’s teams are very difficult to watch. A typical Frank Martin team Nov-Jan turns the ball over a TON, can't shoot free throws, doesn't really have an offense, and commits mass amounts of fouls, and plays down to their competition (this description fits about 75% of our games this year). Watching a team go through 4 minute stretches where all we do is put a streak of those things together is not very entertaining. As a student with a test to study for, or someone who is stressed about work, or people with young children, and people who have to travel several hours, I can understand why people don't have interest in going to games against North Florida A&M Tech State.
