So what is the likely hood that Klein learned how to throw in the off-season? Do you think Tuggle will "show" up at the spring game and wow all of us? Is Lamur in this race at all?

Any news from the first practice on Friday?

I've heard multiple people question his passing abilities... where's this come from?  He wasn't asked to throw last season and when he did, he completed over 60% of his passes.

He was recruited by *cough* Ron Prince *cough* as a pro-style QB so I have to think he has the ability.  Plus, do I need to remind you of this gem from his freshman year:

I have class with one of the players that is getting ready to graduate this year, and he and I talk frequently about what the team is going to look like next year, and we've actually talked about this very same thing. He says that although Klein is fast, and built like a tank, his release is very very slow and typically throws low. He also added accuracy is somewhat of an issue because of this. All those things make his pass plays easy to bust up or intercept hence why he didn't throw all that much.

Synder is saying though that it is his spot to loose though, as per his statements from the first practice. So I guess those rumors that started with the Sams's article, are just rumors.

I really never expected Sam's in the race, especially after we brough Tuggle in. Would Snyder move Sam's out of QB if he has lost all chance, and if so where?

I don't think that Sams gets move mostly because the other QBs only have two years left in eligibility. I would imagine Sams gets red-shirted, not moved, and thouroughly learns the offense from LHCBS, that way in two years time he's one of the best QBs in the conference. He could be moved, though doubtful, the talent is there, after all he hasn't he put time in as a RB and WR?

One week into spring practice, it appears as if rising senior Sammuel Lamur may have fallen behind the two other candidates, although when asked about Lamur, coach Bill Snyder insisted that Lamur "is right there. You don't want to leave him out."

However, writes Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star, Snyder seems especially taken with rising junior Collin Klein and juco transfer Jessie Justin Tuggle. Of Klein, who started two games last year but threw only five passes in those contests, Snyder said, "In all respects, he's a good physical runner for you, and I don't think that has changed any. There is no difference there. In terms of the passing game, he's made improvement."

Of Tuggle, a former Boston College QB and the son of longtime NFL LB Jesse Tuggle, Snyder said, "I admire how much effort he's put into it, and how much he's learned and how he's able to transition what he learns in the classroom and watching videotape and his drills onto the practice field. He doesn't make a lot of mental mistakes. He gets calls in, makes calls and understands what he's supposed to be doing."

Could this turn into a situation similar to LSU's, where a juco QB was brought in ostensibly to take the starting job but the top returnee ends up holding on? One positive: All two (or three, if you believe that Lamur is still in the mix) are dual-threats, so the offense won't have to undergo a significant change depending on who is picked.

I don't know who I'm rooting for. You got Klien on one hand who lets admitt it looks like an Abercrombie model and would deffinetly get his picture on the front of an ESPN or SI magazine.
And on the other you have Tuggle who could possibly be the next coming of Michael Bishop. It's a hard to decide! I guess we'll see in about 16 days.

Unless Klein has improved dramatically, I'm putting my hopes in Tuggle.  We don't need to be one-dimensional this year.

MANHATTAN — Bill Snyder addresses quarterback races like a man tossing bread crumbs to pigeons.

Don't expect more than a morsel or two, which is all Snyder provided after Kansas State's first week of spring drills.

On Justin Tuggle, the 6-foot-3 transfer from Blinn College:

“A quick, quick learner,” Snyder said. “I admire how much effort he's put into it and how much he's learned and how he's able to transition what he learns in the classroom onto the practice field in the team environment.

“He doesn't make a lot of mental mistakes. He gets the calls in, makes the calls and understands what he's doing.”

As with many junior college transfers, Tuggle's playing time could depend on his mastery of the playbook. The quick start bodes well, though Snyder said Tuggle has room improve in the passing game.

“He's a mobile quarterback and has a good capacity to run the ball and be a pretty physical player as well,” Snyder said. “He's throwing the ball not with the consistency that you'd like to have right now, but he's learning to make progress in terms of the decision-making process and where to go with the ball.”

That also applies to Collin Klein, who proved to be a dangerous runner but an unpolished passer in part-time duty last season.

Klein averaged 5.7 yards per carry on 76 rushes as a sophomore while attempting only 18 passes. Helping Klein become more decisive in the pocket is the goal this spring, Snyder said.

“That's where the experience comes into play,” Snyder said. “With more and more opportunities, you get a feel for the progressions and (how to) identify the open receiver and make that decision very, very quickly and move on to the next one. You can't hang onto the ball forever.

“He's making progress. It's not slow, it's just inconsistent.”

Snyder also was quick to note that Sammuel Lamur remains in the thick of the quarterback race. Lamur attempted three passes last season as K-State's No. 3 quarterback.

“Sam's right there,” Snyder said. “He's a very athletic young guy who can throw the ball as well. He's right there in the mix.”

Lamur's biggest obstacle?

“Sam,” Snyder said dryly.

There appears to be little separating the three quarterbacks at this point, which means the race is running right on schedule.

“They're all the same,” wide receiver Chris Harper said. “They're dual (threat) guys. The only difference is the mental capacity.”
