K-State prepping for Baylor; Bryce Brown is in Knoxville?
Three days after Kansas State's 28-24 win at Miami, Tuesday's full attention isn't on the Wildcats' upcoming Big 12 opener with 15th-ranked Baylor this Saturday.
Somehow, again, backup running back Bryce Brown has become the front-and-center story.
Twitter exploded midday Tuesday as a couple of posts first indicated that Brown wasn't in Manhattan. According to one of the accounts, the sophomore running back wasn't even in Kansas, instead appearing on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville.
"Former Vol/Kansas State running back Bryce Brown is on campus today," posted @RockyTopVols. "He might have quit KSU & is hanging out with his g/f."
In his Tuesday press conference, K-State head coach Bill Snyder would only say Brown was dealing with a "tough, personal time," and that the team would try to help him.
Afterward, several players including quarterback Collin Klein, safety Tysyn Hartman and center B.J. Finney met with the media, and when asked any questions regarding Brown offered no comment and appeared somewhat indifferent according to KitchenKC.com's Jeff Burkhart.
Reaction to the former five-star recruit's latest drama has been mixed, but all of it seems genuinely conflicted. On one hand, fans know the back is talented. On the other, the sense seems to be that some feel Brown has already worn out his welcome after missing volunteer summer workouts followed by far-below average play in limited duty.
Brown has carried the ball just three times for 17 yards in two games - having sat out the Kent State game with what Snyder said at the time was a slight injury. However, in his spare time on the field, Brown fumbled against Eastern Kentucky - a turnover that set up the Colonels' lone points in a 10-7 K-State win. Then, last Saturday against the Miami Hurricanes, Brown appeared to turn the wrong direction on a pass route out of the backfield before later missing a blitz pickup. The latter error led to a complete miss on the block, which resulted in Klein getting popped on one of several big hits he absorbed in the game.
Brown was taken out at that point and never saw the field afterward.
The lukewarm feeling toward Brown's latest situation is helped by current rushing leader John Hubert's performance in Miami, where the sophomore rushed for 173 yards on 18 carries and scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
My initial take?
When a running back has one-third as many in-season, mid-week trips to his former campus to see his girlfriend as he does carries on the year, it probably doesn't bode well moving forward in terms of trying to find more playing time in the short-term.
And, at this point, any story or scenario with Bryce Brown's name attached is never simple, good news or not.

Honestly I'm done worrying about what is up with Bryce. Hubert has shown he has what it takes to get the job done. I just hope none of this gets in Arthur's head.

I have a hard time letting this one go if everything turns out for the worse. Snyder has repeatedly mentioned how Bryce has great talent, size, speed, acceleration, athleticism.. basically everything a top tier RB needs (and more so then the other RB's on the team). He has also mentioned how his work ethic (something Snyder fixes no question) and vision on the field (we have seen this with blown blocks, but comes with experience) are a work in progress. So considering he will have 2 more years left once this season ends, how could anyone not be upset with this? Next year and even his senior year coupled with Hubert would be a top 1/2 punch.

I think it's clear that something major is going on with the Family for BOTH brothers to come back to K-State at the same time. I don't think I've ever heard of this happening (probably no other situation like the one they had).
Hopefully he gets this cleared up, thought the missed work outs and the "fishing" time he took over the summer was him clearing his mind, but if we can keep him for 2 more years and come out of this stronger, then take a week off man.

GoPo Is reporting that Bryce has left the team, at least temporally.

We don't know what's going on. But, I'll opinion anyway. Makes me wonder if this isn't a case where the "big time talent" is smarting from actually having to work for his position on the team. On the surface, it appears Bryce Brown wanted to coast onto campus and be handed the starting RB role. This didn't happen, for all of his talent. Now he is sulking and pouting, instead of working harder.
It could, of course, have nothing to do with football.
