The Hurricanes are 1-1 (0-1 in the ACC) with a win over Ohio State and a loss at Maryland. The Hurricanes return 13 starters from a team that went 7-6 (5-3 in the ACC). The Hurricanes are projected to finish 2nd in the ACC Coastal Division.
QB Jacory Harris has completed 70% of his passes for 123 yards with 2 touchdowns (he was suspended for the opener) in 2011. Harris has had a career that has been marred by injuries and inconsistency. "He's had some great numbers, some great success," offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said. "He has to learn that he doesn't need to try and win every game on every play. It's okay to punt or to check down or throw an incompletion or to scramble. I think he gets it."
RB's Lamar Miller and Mike James have combined for 382 yards (303 by Miller) on 68 carries (44 by Miller) (5.6 yards/carry) with 3 touchdowns (2 by James). Miller is elusive and James is a powerful slasher. "The first thing I wrote [after the team's first spring scrimmage] is to find a way to get more than one running back on the field," head coach Al Golden told the Miami Herald last spring.
Miller and James will run behind an offensive line that features 2 seniors (C Tyler Horn and OG Harland Gunn), 1 junior (OT Brandon Washington), 1 sophomore (OG Brandon Linder) and 1 freshmen (OT Jonathan Feliciano). "The offensive line is probably the one position at Miami that looks the way it should look in terms of symmetry," Golden said.
WR's Allen Hurns and Tommy Streeter have combined for 222 yards (123 by Hurns) on 16 catches (10 by Hurns) with 2 touchdowns (both by Hurns). "Both of these guys have great value," Fisch said.
Defensively, the Hurricanes are lead by DT Marcus Forston whose talent has fallen short because of his potential because of injuries. The Hurricanes have a sack machine on the corner with DE Adewale Ojomo who is joined by Andrew Smith on the other side. OLB Sean Spence is the best player on the defense. He's a heavy hitter who likes to do the majority of his damage in the opponent's backfield. CB's Brandon McGee and Michael Williams are first time starters. Williams was plugged in when JoJo Nicolas was moved to safety. The other safety, Vaughn Telemaque, is a ferocious hitter.
The Hurricanes have all new kickers. Jake Wieclaw is the place kicker while Dalton Botts is the punter. WR Travis Benjamin will return kicks.
