Title: Defensive Improvement Poll
Post by: Lynch on August 11, 2011, 06:51:41 AM
So on a scale from blah to Lynch (yes this IS self serving) what do you think this year's Defense is going to look like?

What you see this year is going to be Snyder’s coaching at its best.  I am thinking the motivation and juco/transfer added skill to our defense will make them a force to be reckoned with this year.  I am not saying top defense or anything like that in the Big 12, but I have confidence we will be in the middle which will help us a crap load.

My Defense Order:
#1 OU – This defense is ridiculous.  Some say their safeties are lacking experience, but if you come on within the OU program and earn a starting position, you earned it.
#2 Texas – Raw talent and loads of experience on the defense side.  Hope their offensive can hold up, because they could be on the field a lot.
#3 In my opinion, it’s a tie between A&M and MU.  I will give A&M the edge considering the hype they are getting which will no doubt feed down to the players.
#3.1 MU – Strongest defensive line in the league, and that amounts to a lot each year.
#5 This again is basically a tie between OSU and KSU.  OSU will earn the edge on the rank due to more proven talent in their secondary.  This will be like previous years though, to much offensive for there defense to handle the time on the field.
#5.1 KSU – The experience and addition of highly skilled defensive players along with the motivation from last year will impress many who watch when comparing to last year.
#7 Tech – To many new guys to be strong, but Tech made the right hires and had a strong defensive recruiting year.  Next year this squad will rock.
#8 ISU – Some of the best linebackers in the league.  If only they could carry more of the weight, this defensive would have a surprise year.
#9 KU – This defensive squad is switching it up this year to 3-4 with quality linebackers.  Even though that sounds good, they are still only middle of the pack linebackers with a poor supporting cast.
#10 BU – Such an offensive minded team.  It only works for a handful of wins though.  Defensive really won’t shine on talent or experience.

OSU's defense is actually pretty legit and doesn't get the recognition it deserves.  The only reason we gave up so many yards/points is because we were putting up just as many in a quick fashion.  This site is like the college football version of Pomeroy and has us as the #23 defense last year (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef2010 (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef2010)).

I think the defense order should be:

1. OU - The gap is closing with the major losses this offseason.  They are weakest in the secondary and their LB corps has lost 2 starters.  Still very strong on the line which gives them the edge.
2. A&M - This rank isn't so much about the players they have as much as it is the DC that they have.  They seem to be in the right place at the right time and have a pretty strong secondary.
3. OSU - Lots of depth in the secondary and big lack of depth on the line.  LB corps is very young but have lots of potential (won Defensive Freshman of the Year last year).
4. Mizzou - Really don't hear much about their defense outside of Madison on the line.  I don't expect a whole lot from them.  Now playing more of the offensive South teams, will expose their defense
5. Texas - They have the best players in the league, but still find a way to underperform.  Only reason they are this high is because they seem to have a very defensive state of mind.
6. Tech - Really young, but lots of talent.  They had a really good recruiting year, especially on the defensive line.  Tuberville knows defense from his days in Auburn, give them a few more years to slowly move up the line.
7. & 8. KSU/ISU - The 2 are pretty interchangeable.  ISU has the best LB corps in the league and that's about all.  KSU has a few good players in the secondary and LB and that's about all.
9. Baylor - Just like Texas is defensive minded, Baylor is offensive minded.  They are usually pretty potent on offense, but lose games because they can't play defense.  Nothing has changed.
10. Kansas - Why are they in this conference?  Only good thing is they are putting another LB out there this year which happens to be their strongest facet of the defense (but not saying much).

Their basketball program. No more, no less.
