This isn't the end of the world. It's not like he was going to be named head coach here tomorrow. Assistant job in the NFL/Assistant job in college. Which would you take?

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly added a new linebackers coach in the form of Jim Leavitt, the former University of South Florida head coach. He is the first 49ers coaching hire to not have any NFL experience on his resume. Of course, as a linebackers coach it remains to be seen if that kind of experience is necessary. Prior to his role as head coach he was a defensive assistant at five difference schools, including linebackers coach for two years at Kansas State.
Leavitt was the first head coach of the USF football program and was let go in 2009 after an alleged incident that involved him reportedly struck a player. Leavitt sued and a settlement was reached. He didn't coach last year (that I can tell) and this would seem the first step in an attempt to rehabilitate his image and potentially make his way back up the coaching ranks. It will be interesting to see how long he sticks around with the 49ers.
Given his position with the 49ers, does his lack of head coaching experience matter? Here is your current 49ers coaching staff, based on news reports for some and 49ers official announcements for others:
Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh (Yep, he's still there)
OC: Greg Roman
DC: Vic Fangio
RB: Tom Rathman
WR: John Morton
OL: Tim Drevno & Mike Solari
DL: Jim Tomsula
DB: Ed Donatell

Dissapointing indeed.
Did anyone really expect Bill to fire Cosh though? I've really been trying to tell myself it is also about the talent level, and that we were/are really low on that, but it all falls back on the coaches to make the best out of those players. Hopefully we will all be suprised in the Spring.
No need to panic now, but when Bill retires, or goes on to coach with Bear Bryant in the giant bowl game in the sky, and Leavitt or Paterson aren't on the list as HC replacements, it might be time to worry.

Didn't think that Cosh would be let go, but was hoping that Leavitt would be brought on as "Associate Head Coach in Waiting in charge of Defensive Coordination with seldom input from Chris Cosh" <- That was the official title he was going to be given.

There are also reports of JL denying going to the 49ers

Leavitt says nothing with 49ers is official yet, hints that it could be soon.

GoPowercat just renamed the title of this article from "Leavitt denies reports" to "Leavitt weighs in".
What a circus!

Tampa News wtsp.com Saying its official as of 27 minutes ago.

Maybe he's just getting some NFL experience before he comes here after Snyder decides to retire. Has to fill his time somehow. Wouldn't want to get rusty.
