Title: National Coaching Changes
Post by: cf0102 on November 28, 2010, 09:58:15 AM
Names I've heard so far:

Jon Gruden
Bob Stoops
Houston's Kevin Sumlin
Brent Venables
FIU's Mario Cristobal

I wouldn't be surprised to hear Jim Leavitt's name at some point. That was the first name I thought of when the news broke. Why is this important? Because their A.D. is Kirby Hocutt who played at K-State when Stoops and Leavitt were coaches here and he was a teammate of Brent Venables. This hire could effect the future of K-State football.

Why don't we beat Miami to the punch and hire Leavitt as the D-Coordinator and coach in waiting...just a thought.

I agree with you but would he want to be D-Coordinator and HCIW if he knew he could have a head coaching job right now?

That is a pipe dream. Snyder will be here another 3-5 years at least. Top caliber coaches are not going to wait that long as a HCIW.

another 3-5 years....really??  I thought this was going to be a 3-4 year max type of comeback!  Unless he is going for Paterno'esque status!

I predict that coach Snyder's last regular season game at K-State will be sometime in November of 2013!

Paterno'esque status!

This is exactly what is going to happen. The guy took 3 years off, drove his family nuts, and is back coaching because that's what he does best in his life. You can't just spend 30+ years of your life eating 1 meal a day and sleeping only 4 hours then just up and retire. He realized that being retired is not him, he will coach until 1 of 2 things happen.

1. Health reasons cause him to leave.
2. He is pushed out.

#2 will not happen no matter how bad things "could" get.

We have him for several more years fellas.

There are rumors that Leavitt has been in Manhattan but I'll leave it at that... rumors.

I, for one, would be ecstatic if we got him as Def. Coordinator.

The reason I keep bringing this particular job up is that the names that we keep throwing around as our possible next coach keep getting brought up for this specific job.

There's talk of him going back to OU as offensive coordinator if their current offensive coordinator goes to Indiana which is rumored

Interesting...

Hypothetical question:  Would you accept Mangino back to K-State as Offensive Coordinator?

It would probably never happen, but I think I could get on board with the scenario.  I'm always looking for a way to stick it to KU, he's an offensive genius, and 1998 was a long time ago (and water under the bridge).

Might require him to drop some weight so I dont (http://www.myemoticons.com/images/humor/bathroom/vomit-into-the-toilet.gif) everytime I see him on the sideline.

I would take him back in a mangino heartbeat. This goes for any coach we had from 1994-2002.

Let the games begin. Of course you're going to hear Oklahoma's Bob Stoops (they've already lost one assistant ant there's talk that Oklahoma Assistant Head Coach and Assistant Defensive Coordinator Bobby Jack Wright could be headed to Texas State), TCU's Gary Patterson and even Mike Shanahan but the names that make the most sense to me are Utah's Kyle Whittingham and Boise State's Chris Petersen. Petersen could bring OC Bryan Harsin with him.

On an unrelated note, I saw Carl Pelini's name on a list for Head Coach of Louisiana-Lafayette. Also Boise State's Petersen along with Iowa State's Paul Rhodes and Florida State Defensive Coordinator Mark Stoops are being rumored for Pitt.

Post by: Lynch on December 09, 2010, 08:11:51 AM
I don't see Stoops leaving Oklahoma, especially after he wins the Big 12 this year. I could see Shanahan taking the job, but there is some risk. Chris Petersen is the most interesting name being thrown in there for sure. The question for Chris is would he succeed. Look at how well the last coach to leave Boise did, oooh that's right he just lost his job.

Starting to hear the Pelini brothers names being thrown out there for Miami and also that former KSU OC James Franklin is on the list at Vanderbilt. Franklin is also HCIW at Maryland.

I would be absolutely shocked if he jumped ship.  Then again, maybe he wants to get out of the Big12-2 conference just as bad as some of the others?!?

Now that the Leavitt ship has sailed, what changes do you think will be made to Snyder's staff?

We still need to fill Ricky Rahne's position (TE coach).  He was the last holdover from the Prince regime and left for Vanderbilt to become QB coach under James Franklin.  There have been rumors that Sean Snyder would officially join the staff but not necessarily fill this spot.

There has also been speculation that Keith Burns will reunite with Houston Nutt (played together at Arkansas) to serve in some defensive capacity at Ole Miss.  His son, Tanner, would more than likely stay at K-State as he transferred here from San Jose State last season and already exhausted his redshirt sitting out for the year.

Mo Lattimore (OB 2.0) has suggested that retirement is imminent and this would be perfect timing as the defensive line has struggled and some new blood would be beneficial.  He has been on the staff for 20 years!

Finally, Matt Wallerstedt's name has started to come up in the last couple days.  He is a graduate of Manhattan High and K-State, as well as coached under Prince for two years.  Word is he left because he was not impressed with Prince's coaching philosophy but would be open to returning.  In addition, he also coached under current OC Dana Dimel, when he was head coach at Wyoming.  Wallerstedt is currently DC and Associate Head Coach at Air Force where he has had a lot of success recruiting linebackers and improving that defense.

Yeah there won't be any big changes this year besides the obvious vacancy left by Rahnes. I honestly don't think there will be any kind of shake up until the end of next season at the very earliest.

I know this thread hasn't got much use in the last few months but...

What happens at Penn State?

Ohio State?

and Ole Miss?

Thoughts on if Gill gets canned at the end of the season.... That is if KU can afford it? Where does Leach land?
