Title: A Look at Texas Southern
Post by: cf0102 on November 24, 2010, 04:31:47 PM
The Tigers are 1-4 with a win at Oregon State and losses at Drake, Wichita State, Oklahoma and Oregon. The Tigers return 2 starters from last season (a squad that posted a 17-16 overall record, including an 11-7 mark in SWAC play). The Tigers are projected to finish 9th in the conference this season.

The Tigers are lead by G Lawrence Johnson-Danner, F Kevin Galloway and G Harrison Smith. Johnson-Danner is averaging 16 points/game (leads the team), 3 rebounds/game and 1 assist/game. Johnson-Danner, a 6'4" redshirt freshman, can hit the long ball (he leads the team at 42% so far this season) hitting four against Wichita State and five against Oregon State.

Galloway is averaging 14 points/game, 6 rebounds/game (leads the team) and 7 assists/game (leads the team). Galloway has transferred twice, from Kentucky and USC, before landing at Texas Southern, and was a big scorer in High School with 17 points/game as a senior.

Smith is averaging 12 points/game and 4 rebounds/game. Smith transferred to Texas State from the University of Texas (another Texas team that we own) and head coach Tony Harvey says of him: "He's a solid player who can score and shoot the ball," Harvey said. "He's also a good defender."

Texas Southern is trying to become a consistent contender while trying to overcome the APR penalties incurred by the previous administration. As a matter of fact they think they can surprise and contend for the league title if everything breaks their way. The biggest problem is: If Galloway struggles the team will struggle to score at times and he cannot afford to turn the ball over. Many people think that the reason they won 17 games last season is because of two players who are both gone this year. But if the Tigers have better chemistry and more depth because of the newcomers, the team may be better off in the long run. The Cats should roll in this game.

" The Cats should roll in this game. "  Isn't that what we said against Pres. Univ???  :typical:

This will be an interesting game to watch.  Either we will play like we did against Pres. or the Duke loss will inspire us to achieve what we set out to do when the year began.  I say look for a 20+ point rout.  I bet that Duke game affected our team in a positive manner....fingers crossed!

Heck yes that Duke game should have affected our team in a positive manner. DUKE is the team to beat, we are not DUKE yet. The team now knows exactly what it takes to be DUKE. Discipline, FT %, spacing, communication, and more than 1 person being able to lead the team. I don't see us having another Pres. game this year.

Someone compared Duke with KU (pressure defense and speed) yesterday.  I think that when they get Selby in there, they will be exactly that.  They will be hard to beat.  That's why I'm glad we played Duke so early and they handed it too us.  That experience will definitely give the Cats some ideas on beating good teams.  We can and WILL get better or Frank will "destoy them"

I didn't watch the game (I DVR them) because I hoped I didn't have to because it was Texas Southern. I don't think I'm going to go back. It sounds like Frank was pretty happy about the first 30 minutes and pretty unhappy about the last 10. Thoughts?

Well they made 13 shots in a row....I would be pissed too but when he sits some of our best players that is what he gets....I think right now our guys are just not that mentally strong.  Once we get a lead they get comfortable which will hurt us big in the long run.

We wont have a lead like that in conference play. The comfort level will stay fairly low.
