Title: A Look at Gonzaga
Post by: cf0102 on November 19, 2010, 07:37:58 PM
The Bulldogs are 2-1 with wins over Southern University and IUPUI and a loss to San Diego State. The Bulldogs return 4 starters from last season (a squad that posted a 27-7 overall record, including a 12-2 mark in West Coast Conference play, in 2008-09). The Bulldogs are projected to rule the WCC again but don't be surprised if Loyola Marymount gives them a run for their money.

The Bulldogs are lead by G Steven Gray and C's Robert Sacre and Sam Dower. Gray is averaging 26 points/game (leads the team), 6 rebounds/game and 7 assists/game (leads the team). Gray hit a big shot late in the NCAA Tournament win against Florida State and had 18 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in the WCC semifinal victory vs. Loyola Marymount. He had 14 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists in a road win against Saint Mary's.

Sacre is averaging 12 points/game, 7 rebounds/game (leads the team) and 1 assist/game. Sacre is an imposing specimen who lives in the weight room. He bangs and embraces the dirty work, powering up put-backs and muscling his way across the lane for jump-hooks.

Dower is averaging 11 points/game and 5 rebounds/game. Dower is a southpaw who is deceptive around the basket and he is a big time scorer from the perimeter. He has a decent hook shot and, like I said, he isn't shy about shooting from outside.

Gonzaga's frontcourt trio of Elias Harris, Sacre and Kelly Olynyk spent the summer playing together at the FIBA World Championships. That cohesiveness leads you to believe that the Bulldogs will not miss a beat this season even though I expect them to be challenged by Loyola Marymount. This will be a stiff test to say the least for our 'Cats. If we're fortunate enough to get by this game there is a potential meeting with defending National Champion Duke on the horizon.

Back to Gonzaga....I will be honest, I think the came into the year slightly over-rated and they will be a tough opponent and a good win but we shouldn't have any issue with them.  And did you know that Digger Phelps picked them to win the NC...I bet he wishes he had that pick back!

I just hope the Curtis Kelly crap will be over soon!!

Starting power forward Elias Harris suffered a foot injury against the Aztecs, but an MRI revealed no tear of his right Achilles tendon. Harris is expected to play Monday.

Keep an eye on this.
